New freight corridor a big boost: PMHe flags off world’s first 1.5 km-long electrified double stack container train

      WHY IN NEWS:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the New Rewari-New Madar section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and flagged off the world’s first 1.5-km-long electrified double stack long haul container train.

  • The corridor would lead to the development of growth centres and points in several cities, creation of job opportunities and conditions attracting more investments.
  • It would give a new fillip to the local industries and manufacturing units by providing them faster and cheaper access to the national and international markets.
  • They would get easy access to the ports in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
  • Compared to the previous freight train average speed of 25 km/hour, the maximum of 90 km/hour had now been achieved.
  • In all, 133 railway stations in nine States would be impacted by the Dedicated Freight Corridor.

New multi-model logistic parks, freight terminals, container depots/terminals and parcel hubs would be developed at these places

Sudan to sign the “Abraham Accords”

      HEADLINES:

Sudan signs pact with US on normalizing ties with Israel

      WHY IN NEWS:

Sudan and the United States have signed an accord that paves the way for normalizing ties with Israel, making it the third Arab country to sign the “Abraham Accords.”

      ISSUE: 

Washington and Khartoum on Wednesday inked the “Abraham Accords,” bringing forward a process of normalization of Sudan’s ties with Israel.

SUDAN SIGNS PACT WITH US ON NORMALIZING

  • The signing took place less than a month after Washington removed Khartoum from its blacklist as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Alongside it was an aid agreement promising $1 billion (€810 million) annual World Bank financing for Sudan

SIGNIFICANCE

  • “The agreement allows Sudan, Israel, and other signers of the Abraham Accords to build mutual trust and increase cooperation in the region.”

Sudan is the third Arab country to sign the accords after the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain last year

  • Meanwhile, Morocco has also agreed on “normalization” with Israel , restoring past relations between the two.

Israel has maintained full diplomatic relations with two of its Arab neighbors, Egypt and Jordan, after signing peace treaties in 1979 and 1994 respectively.

  • Sudan agreed to the normalization deal with Israel in October but said it would only come into force after its approval by a parliament that has not yet been formed.
