Australian bushfires: WWF study

Nearly 3 bln animals perished in Australian bushfires: WWF study

      WHY IN NEWS:

Researchers pointed out the extent to which biodiversity in Australia was affected.

SYLLABUS COVERED: GS 1 : 3 : Global Warming : Conservation of Biodiversity

An estimated 143 million mammals, 180 million birds, 51 million frogs and 2.5 billion reptiles affected

Scientists from University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, University of Newcastle, Charles Sturt University and Birdlife Australia on behalf of WWF.

  • Nearly three billion animals died or were displaced because of Australia’s bushfire season between 2019 and 2020- World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) July 2020.

Nearly 11.46 million hectares — an area around the size of the United Kingdom — was assessed.

  • This included 8.5 million hectares of forest land, mostly in the southeast and southwest and 120,000 hectares of the northern rainforest.

Mammal numbers were collated on published data on densities of each species in different areas.

  • Reptile estimates were calculated on the basis of environmental conditions and a global database.
  • Several reptiles were affected, including skinks, who live in densities of more than 1,500 individuals per hectare.
  • The number of birds lost were estimated from BirdLife Australia data based on nearly 104,000 standardised surveys.

Australian scientists have warned against the addition of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, which they said increased the risk of bushfires.

  • The risk of dry conditions that drove the fires increased by a factor of more than four since 1900.
  • This could increase to eight times more if global heating above pre-industry levels reached 2 degrees Celsius.
  • Australia has begun a royal commission inquiry into the bushfires, the findings of which are expected by October.

      IASbhai WINDUP:

  • It’s hard to think of another event anywhere in the world in living memory that has killed or displaced that many animals.
  • The impact on animals other than koalas — a species native to Australia that became the face of the bushfires — was much more.

Aashray (आश्रय), the Medical Bed Isolation System to combat COVID-19 by stopping/ minimizing the spread of virus/ infection released by the patient.

  • This is a low cost, reusable solution to maintain proper isolation of COVID-19 patients.
  • It creates suction /negative pressure near exhale, and further filtering and disinfecting the aerosol.

29th July Current Affairs News Analysis | Prelims & Mains

  • The envelope is reusable as it is antibacterial-antifungal and can be sanitized.

The suction blower throws the filtered and contamination free air to the outside environment.

  • Bed Isolation System envelopes are made up of specialized material and manufacturing process.
  • Envelope is opaque up to 3 ft from bottom to maintain privacy of the patient.

It is built with transparent and translucent 7.5(l) ×7(w) ×6.5(h) ftsize supported on medical grade materials structure.

Lyfas App – CAWACH

Bangalore based startup brings out mobile app for detection & risk assessment of COVID 19 infected individuals

      WHY IN NEWS:

It uses the power of smartphone processor and smartphone sensors to capture a bunch of body signals

MINISTRY? :-Ministry of Science & Technology
SYLLABUS COVERED: GS 3: Recent Developments : Science and Technology

Combating the crisis needs technological solutions that can carry this out rapidly while minimizing risk for healthcare professionals.

  • Acculi Labs is armed with ‘Lyfas’ a clinical-grade, non-invasive, digital functional biomarker smartphone tool for screening.
  • It can be used in early detection, root cause analysis, acute event risk assessment, prognosis, and home monitoring too .

  • The Centre for Augmenting WAR with COVID-19 Health Crisis (CAWACH), an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
  • It has selected Bangalore based startup Acculi Labs to develop a COVID risk assessment profile called Lyfas COVID score.
  • CAWACH, an initiative by the National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), DST, Government of India

  • The technology will detect the possible infection in an asymptomatic individual to prioritise the conventional testing queue.
  • It can carry out a risk assessment of an asymptomatic individual to become symptomatic .

  • Lyfas is an Android application in which, when one keeps the index finger on the rear phone camera of a mobile phone for 5 minutes.

It captures the capillary pulse and blood volume change and derive 95 biomarkers with proprietary algorithms.

  • It uses the power of smartphone processor and smartphone sensors to capture a bunch of body signals.

  • Lyfas then provides cardio-respiratory, cardio-vascular, hematology and hemorheology.
  • The app is based on neurology based parameters that are capable of tracking minute pathophysiological changes in the body.
  • These changes are further profiled into organ system-wide response.

The technology is focused on population screening, monitoring of quarantined individuals.

  • This can also help in surveillance at the community spreading phase.

  • It has been proved to detect asymptomatic individuals with an accuracy of 92%
  • Lyfas specificity is about 90%, and a sensitivity of 92% .

Inexpensive, accessible, point-of-care smart phone based diagnostics is a powerful tool that would tremendously help in screening the high risk cases.

  • This can also be used in sustained monitoring of quarantined cases and general surveillance.

  • Photoplethysmography(PPG)
  • Photo Chromatography(PCG)
  • Arterial Photoplethysmography(APPG)
  • Mobile spirometry
  • Pulse Rate Variability(PRV)

      IASbhai WINDUP:

  • While AarogyaSetu works on contact tracing where one has to enter your symptoms, Lyfas is a proper medical screening test which purely depends upon test results.
  • Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is supporting innovations offering comprehensive solutions through the startup-ecosystem.
